Physical Attributes & Initial Impression of Personality
A widower, he sports a curly brown wig. With a double chin and a rather bulbous nose, Samuel is not tremendously handsome although not grotesquely ill-favoured, either.
Background
His friend John Evelyn described him as "universally beloved, hospitable, generous, learned in many things".
Known for his drinking and wenching, his diligence in his position of Secretary to the Lord High Admiral and the intelligence to be found in his hazel eyes comes as a surprise to people who do not know him well. Sam adores books and has a substantial library of his own. Samuel sailed to the Low Countries to return the King from exile: he thinks James, Duke of York, is one of the finest seamen ever to sail. Not terribly fond of Prince Rupert - Sam finds him rather difficult to work for.
In real life Pepys became famous for the fact he kept a diary, published after his death, which is one of the main sources on the Restoration, together with the diary of his friend John Evelyn.
