Description

Custos is the beloved tricolour (Cavalier King Charles) Spaniel, with big brown eyes, belonging to Lady Blackheath. Catherine chose the Latin word, meaning 'guardian', for the little dog's name, despite the fact that the adorable pup is not at all inclined to be a guard dog.

The King gifted the pup to Catherine, in September 1675, after she had spoken so enthusiastically of his dogs and her desire to one day have a puppy of her own. Another of Custos' litter-mates was gifted to Frances Liddell.

He is a sweetly disposed and very friendly dog, that is often in his mistress's company when she is out and about. Custos, as is common with his breed, is highly affectionate and just the right size for a lap dog. He also adores the company of other dogs. He is ever at her side, even while his mistress is lost in her painting, and Catherine treasures him.
