Born to Walter Vaughan and his wife, Alice (nee: Bond), during or before 1661, she is a heiress and only child. Her grandfather, Canon Frederick Vaughan was a respected clergyman, but is deceased. He and his wife were from Wiltshire, and he was the younger son of a nobleman (pos. 2nd Earl of Carbery)
Her family resides in Porthammel House, one of two great houses in Porthammel, Brecknockshire. In the area are o Bronllys Castle, 2 great houses, 4 manor houses, many little farm houses, and a respectable inn. It is good farmland, and Porthamel House has a deer park reaching down to the Afon Llynfi. It is a fortified manor house, built by the first High Sheriff of Brecknockshire.
